EAST POINT, Ga. — The Atlanta Community Food Bank typically receives 500,000 pounds of food daily. Fifteen-percent of that supply could soon be at risk if the government shutdown continues for several weeks.
"If this is a prolonged shutdown, the level of need could really increase dramatically, well beyond the capacity of the Food Bank and our partners to meet that need," said Atlanta Community Food Bank President and CEO Kyle Waide.
He said they regularly receive truckloads of canned goods, frozen protein and fresh produce from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, along with federal funding.
If that were to be disrupted, Waide said it would be hard for individual donors to replace that given the increased need they're seeing as well.
