BOSTON —

A Boston police sergeant who retired after his arrest on child rape charges is continuing to collect a hefty pension each month as his court case unfolds.

Paul Downey pleaded not guilty last week to charges of raping a child and paying the victim for sex.

"Paul Downey, then a 58-year-old Boston sergeant, met a 14-year-old boy on a dating app called Grindr," prosecutor Brandon DeAvilla said.

The prosecutor detailed the case in court after Downey was indicted by a grand jury, alleging that Downey met the victim on two occasions, taking him to a parking lot near the South Bay Mall, where the encounters reportedly took place in Downey's vehicle.
