COLUMBIA, S.C. — Parts of Cayce were evacuated Thursday morning after officials said chemicals were accidentally mixed in a tanker truck at the Crystal Clean facility on Poplar Drive.
Crystal Clean, an environmental services company that collects used motor oil and provides waste management services, operates the branch facility at 627 Poplar Street. The company serves multiple businesses across South Carolina.
Emergency services was contacted around 6:30 a.m. after personnel arriving at the site noticed a Crystal Clean tanker trailer containing nonhazardous waste oil that was warm to the touch and appeared to be undergoing a chemical reaction.
Firefighters later reported a cloud of vapor rising from the 4,000-gallon tanker, which held about 1,900 gallons of a chemical mixture.
