LANSING — A nearly 70-foot spruce tree from Sault Ste. Marie will serve as Michigan’s official Christmas tree at the state Capitol this holiday season.

The Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget announced Thursday that the tree, donated by Linda Reid in memory of her grandparents, will be transported to Lansing later this month. Officials said the tree was planted by Reid’s grandparents when she was a toddler.

“I don’t remember exactly them planting that tree, but my grandmother’s go-to place was to go to the woods and dig up small stuff and bring it home and transplant it,” Reid said. “She had a green thumb so I have a feeling that it probably was a tree that came from the local woods.”

The tree will be harvested Oct. 30 before being delivered to the Capitol lawn. It
