For all the off-season developments with the Maple Leafs — contracts and trades — the biggest issue will be the first line.

The big question? Is Auston Matthews healthy enough to get back to a 50- or 60-goal pace?

If exhibition games are any indication, then yes.

Matthews scored on a power play just 2:08 into Thursday night’s 3-1 loss to the Detroit Red Wings at Scotiabank Arena.

“Tonight was a weird game,” said Matthews. “With the penalties, it was tough to find a rhythm. But physically I felt really good, a step better than the previous game I played in.”

It was his second goal in two games, perhaps a sign he’ll do better than the 33 he potted last season.
