KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash along Interstate 40 in Jefferson County that went unnoticed for "an undetermined amount of time," according to a preliminary report released Thursday.

Gary Sorah, 55, died following a crash on I-40 near the I-81 interchange. According to a preliminary THP report, a Kia Soul driven by Sorah was approaching the interchange traveling west in the inside lane of I-40 when the car went off the roadway to the left and struck a guardrail.

The vehicle spun and struck a TDOT road sign before entering the woods.

"An undetermined amount of time" passed before the vehicle was noticed by a passerby, the report states.
