LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is warning consumers about an increase in reports of a scam targeting Michigan residents through fraudulent text messages.
The scam falsely claims to be from the “State of Michigan Department of Vehicles” and alleges that recipients have unpaid tickets that must be paid immediately to avoid penalties such as license and registration suspension or legal action.
The messages include a link to a fake payment site and instruct recipients to provide personal and financial information.
These fraudulent texts display several red flags associated with smishing, a form of phishing conducted via text message.
Consumers are advised not to reply to suspicious texts or click on any links or attachments.
