LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - The Mid-Michigan chapter of the American Red Cross will be installing smoke alarms in local homes and helping families create emergency escape plans in case of a fire.

According to the Red Cross, house fires claim an average of seven lives every day in the U.S.

Since 2014, volunteers in the Mid-Michigan chapter have installed more than 8,000 smoke alarms.

On the day of the event, volunteers will gather at the University of Michigan Health Sparrow St. Lawrence Campus before heading out into the community.

Smoke alarm installations will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
