Gov. Kevin Stitt wants lawmakers to let the Governor appoint the State Superintendent of Public Instruction instead of voters electing the position every four years. He’s asking the legislature to put the question on the ballot.

Stitt says an appointment would align the superintendent with the Governor’s vision for education and create clearer accountability.

“I urge the legislature to take this opportunity to send to the ballot an appointment authority for the next governor, to be able to appoint the Superintendent of Education, to align with that vision,” said Stitt.

Rep. Mike Osburn (R–Edmond) agrees with the Governor. He says an appointed superintendent would answer directly to the Governor, allowing them to focus more on education priorities instead of outside politics.
