The Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT) has issued an update following backlash from the British public concerning the new digital ID initiative.

There has been a mixed response to the new scheme, which was announced by Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, with two million people having signed a petition to stop the forecast rollout.

At the moment, the initiative appears to be going ahead, with the government stating digital ID cards are expected to be issued to all UK residents before the next general election, which will legally occur no later than August 2029.

Officials from the government have previously said the goal of the cards are to provide proof of a person's identity and their residency status in Britain.
