HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The shutdown of the federal government means that federal dollars flowing into state Women, Infant and Children (WIC) Program funds have dried up, causing worry amongst recipients and distributors.
WIC funds are distributed by local health departments to help families in need purchase nutritious food. The federal government gives money to the states, who then distribute them to local groups where the need is heaviest.
WIC also has an educational component where recipients are taught things about childcare and proper nutrition.
