PORTLAND, Maine — Breast Cancer Awareness Month is underway, with a focus on early detection and risk factors.
It's a cause that's significant to everyone at NEWS CENTER Maine.
The station's former community relations director, Kim Charland, has battled an advanced stage of the disease for nearly five years.
She and her supporters are fundraising for the Jimmy Fund Walk on Sunday in Boston to support research into new treatments and a cure at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Five years ago, Kim started experiencing extreme fatigue.
"I just chalked it up to a busy season at work, but looking back, that was the first symptom," Kim recalled.
