Elmira, N.Y. (WETM) — On Oct. 1 the United States Federal Government shut down because the Democrats and Republicans could not come to an agreement for funding for the new fiscal year.

A lot of federal employees were told not to go to work, but those who aren't an independent contractor will receive back pay.

"People that might work at the post office here and they do a good loyal, long hard job, I'm hearing they might not be getting their checks until its settled and that seems a little unfair," said Mary Horton.

Federal employees who are deemed essential, are working without pay, but will receive backpay too.

Airports, United States Postal Services, Department of Veteran Affairs, and the Social Security Administration are still open.
