OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Fifth graders at Neihardt Elementary within Millard Public Schools are learning all about democracy.

Tom Whisinnand saw First Alert 6’s report on the Kid Governor Program in July and says he knew he had to sign his class up.

“I thought this is an absolutely amazing, awesome, wonderful opportunity to get kids involved in an authentic learning experience from the ground up, and it really reaches to the upper echelons of government,” says Whisinnand.

Students have already learned all about their state government in the 4th grade.

“There’s a lot of parallels between the federal government and the state government, and so it’s really awesome to see and address the misconceptions they may have about federal and state government and the interplay between the two,” says
