A 35-year-old man appeared in federal court Friday afternoon, accused of shining a laser at government helicopters and planes circling the Portland ICE building.

Hector Miranda-Mendoza pointed a green beam Saturday night at two Portland police planes, a Cessna Skylane 944 and another Cessna 172 plane and a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Airbus H125 helicopter.

Investigators traced the laser beams to the front porch of Miranda-Mendoza’s home on Northeast Crystal Lane, at least 5 miles away, according to a federal affidavit.

The helicopter crew members said they took off from Hillsboro Airport, flew to about 5,000 feet around the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building and were circling it when they started to get “lit up” by a laser on and off for about 10 minutes around
