FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — A possible second fatal bear attack in Arkansas has sparked concern over human-bear encounters.
KNWA/FOX24 turned to wildlife expert Don White, Jr., Ph.D., James White Endowed Professor at the University of Arkansas–Monticello, for insight.
KNWA/FOX24: How unusual is it to see 2 possible fatal bear attacks in such a short time frame in Arkansas?
White: A bear-caused human mortality is an exceedingly rare event. In North America, black bears cause an average of less than one human death per year. In fact, since 1900, black bears have killed just over 60 people in North America. Black bears, therefore, are not a major threat to humans in Arkansas.
