PORTLAND, Maine — The government continues its shutdown as Congress works to find common ground on several issues, including healthcare and protections for health insurance.

Enhanced premium tax credits, which discount healthcare premiums offered through the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) marketplace, are set to expire in December unless Congress takes action to renew the tax credit subsidies.

Many Democrats withheld their votes, refusing to support a continuing resolution that would have kept the government funded, thereby preventing the Senate Republican majority from meeting the 60-vote threshold needed to pass their version of the bill.

Democratic Representative Chellie Pingree said the Democrats are fighting to protect the programs that matter to the people.
