A Queensland man has been charged over allegedly threatening to kill Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese via social media.

The man, who The Courier Mail has named as Norman Dean Lake, has reportedly been remanded in custody.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) had executed a search warrant at a residential property in the Moreton Bay suburb of Newport on Saturday.

"As part of the operation, one man has been charged with using a carriage service to make a threat to kill, via a social media platform, contrary to section 474.15(1) of the Criminal Code," an AFP spokesperson told SkyNews.com.au.

The alleged offence carried a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, the spokesperson said.

The man had been expected to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on Saturday.
