Liberal MP Andrew Hastie has been tipped to mount a possible leadership challenge in 2026, as pressure builds on Opposition Leader Sussan Ley.

Mr Hastie quit his position as shadow home affairs minister in a shock move on Friday, following disagreements about net zero and immigration policy.

Sources told Sky News Sunday Agenda that Mr Hastie could challenge Ms Ley’s leadership in 2026, ahead of the 2028 federal election.

He has so far downplayed talk of an imminent challenge, saying he continued to support Ms Ley and had no plans to destabilise the leadership.

Mr Hastie said on Saturday that his decision to quit came after it became clear he would not have a role in leading the opposition’s immigration policy .
