NORMAN — Michael Hawkins Jr. progressed through valuable reps Saturday as he led No. 5 Oklahoma to a 44-0 win over lowly Kent State.
OU’s sophomore backup quarterback, starting in place of the injured John Mateer, completed 14-of-24 passes (58%) for 162 yards and three touchdowns and rushed nine times for 33 yards and another score.
Hawkins was pressured by the Golden Flashes’ defense early, but still made some magic happen. On the Sooners’ first possession, he evaded a potential sack and floated a pass to the end zone, where Isaiah Sategna high pointed the ball for a 30-yard touchdown catch and OU’s first points of the day.
