EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) -- Mae's Way Foundation has held its first Make a Way Benefit Dinner as a way to celebrate and show families in the community that you matter.

The Mae's Way Foundation serves children whose parents are taken by suicide. Founded by michele gates the organization has grown drastically in its 3 years of operation. Its reach provides for children in multiple states and offers a scholarship program.

"Losing a parent can bring so many challenges, including financial ones, but the scholarship is about more than that it's about empowering young people like Jillian and helping them make a way forward in their future,” founder Michelle Gates said.

This year's scholarship recipient is Jillian Troutman. Troutman is a freshman at USI studying to become a nurse.
