×BLACKSBURG, Va. — Philip Montgomery wasn’t hesitating about making a fourth-down call Saturday afternoon. If Virginia Tech needed to gain a yard for a score late in the third quarter, the Hokies interim coach already made up his mind that he was going to go for the touchdown.

A penalty flag was spotted on the Lane Stadium grass. It was an unsportsmanlike penalty on the Hokies.

That play summed up the Hokies’ 30-23 loss to Wake Forest before an announced crowd of 65,632. It was yet another self-inflicted wound that cost Virginia Tech dearly in a game that was within its grasp and ended in a one-score loss for the ninth time since the start of the 2023 season.
