NORFOLK, Va. — Five people were injured after a crash in the 200 block of West Ocean View Avenue Saturday evening, according to Norfolk Fire-Rescue.

Crews responded to a reported power outage and discovered a serious single-vehicle crash.

According to officials, the driver lost control of the vehicle, hit a curb, then hit a 6-by-6-foot Dominion Energy transformer in the brush on the north side of Ocean View Avenue. Five people were taken to the hospital, including one with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators say alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor, but speed was.

The impact of the crash caused significant damage to the transformer’s shell, resulting in an estimated 100 to 200 gallons of non-PCB (non-hazardous) mineral oil leaking onto the roadway.
