PETERSBURG, Va. — Virginia State University police and Chesterfield County police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead Saturday night in a parking lot near the VSU Multipurpose Center.

Authorities confirmed the man was not a registered student at Virginia State University. A preliminary report revealed that he died from a fatal gunshot wound.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of that individual who tragically lost his life near our campus,” the university said in a social media post.

While the campus lockdown has been lifted and the campus is secure, officials asked the Trojan community to avoid the area around the Multipurpose Center as the investigation continues.
