We know what he did. On Thursday Jihad al-Shamie drove a car into people outside a synagogue in Manchester. Armed with a knife he tried to get into the building before police shot him. Two ordinary men in late middle age – the kind of men I’ve seen around me all my life – Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz – were killed. Al-Shamie made sure of his own death by making police believe he was armed with explosives.

We have an idea who al-Shamie was: a man in his mid 30s who had arrived in Britain in the mid 90s as a child and became a citizen 10 years later. His father is a surgeon who posted on social media his support for the 7 October Hamas attack on Israelis. The son was on bail after being arrested (but not charged) on suspicion of rape.
