Last month, Alexander Fedotov, a former transport chief in St Petersburg, was found dead outside a luxury hotel at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport. He had been staying on a high floor, and a criminal investigation is underway, with no suicide note discovered. Fedotov was connected to Roman Starovoit, a transport minister who died under suspicious circumstances shortly after being dismissed by President Vladimir Putin. The list of suspicious deaths includes Lukoil tycoon Ravil Maganov, who fell from a hospital window in September 2022, and his successor, Vladimir Nekrasov, who died of “acute heart failure” in October 2023. Both had opposed Putin’s military actions. Other notable cases include the sudden death of Russian senator Vladimir Lebedev and the hanging of Lukoil vice-president Vitaly Robertus. In December 2022, Pavel Antov, a sausage tycoon, also fell from a hotel window in India, while Marina Yankina, a defence official, died after a 160-foot fall in St Petersburg in February 2023. The pattern of these deaths has raised significant concerns about the safety of individuals linked to the Russian government and its business interests.
