A 60-year-old man who allegedly fired up to 50 bullets at random members of the public in Sydney's inner west, injuring multiple people including one seriously, has been charged.

From about 7:45pm on Sunday night, Croydon Park was plunged into lockdown following reports of an active shooter on Georges River Road, near the intersection of Brighton Street.

Over a 2-hour period, police officers exchanged fire with the alleged gunman, Artemios Mintzas, in what they described as a "highly dangerous operation".

Locals ducked for cover as Mr Mintzas allegedly fired shots "indiscriminately" from the window of a unit above a business, with bullets striking 13 vehicles and a nearby bus shelter, according to police.
