MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Fire Prevention Week kicked off Sunday, with the dangers of lithium-ion batteries as this year's focus. The batteries are found in phones, laptops and even e-bikes.

The National Fire Protection Association says firefighters respond to more than 300,000 home fires each year. Many of those fires, experts say, can be prevented with simple safety steps.

Those experts warn lithium-ion batteries can overheat, catch fire or even explode.

If you live in Memphis, there's help. You may be eligible for a free smoke alarm if you're 60 years and older or have a least one child under 18.

Your free alarm will be installed by appointment when an adult is present.
