Call it a buzzer beater. Call it a life-saver for the Edmonton Oilers. Call it the best bargain in hockey history.

Call it all three after Connor McDavid and the Oilers avoided going to sudden death with his future when the two sides agreed, two days before opening night, to a two-year contract with a stunning $12.5 million per year.

Stunning in the sense that it is shocking low — no raise all from his last contract — and illustrates just how serious he is when he says this is all about winning in Edmonton.

He put his money where his mouth is, leaving a good $14 million on the table over those two years. Not that he’s waiting at the mailbox for his GST rebate cheque to arrive (he is in the final year of an eight-year, $100 million deal) but $14 million is $14 million.
