Police have charged a gunman who allegedly fired indiscriminately on a suburban street, leaving one person seriously injured and sparking a shootout with officers.

The 60-year-old allegedly peppered a busy Sydney shopping strip with bullets on Sunday night, plunging residents in a suburb into an hours-long lockdown.

Up to 100 bullets were sprayed at Croydon Park, in the city's inner west, forcing terrified locals to shelter as windows and glass around them shattered and bullet holes were left in nearby cars.

The man is accused of engaging in a shootout with police after officers were targeted in the shooting spree, NSW Police acting Superintendent Stephen Parry said.
