The new French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu only unveiled his new cabinet yesterday. Today, he shocked France by quitting after just 14 hours at the head of his government.

He’d promised to work for a compromise to agree a budget but said that, with other parties unwilling to make concessions, his job was impossible.

Tonight, President Macron has asked him to stay on in a bid to hammer out a way forward in last-minute crisis talks.
