CHARLESTON (WV News) — West Virginia’s severance tax collections have rebounded, Deputy Revenue Secretary Mark Muchow told state lawmakers Monday.

The state has collected $82.2 million in severance taxes so far this fiscal year, a 10.8% increase from the previous year, Muchow said during the Joint Committee on Finance meeting.

“The severance tax numbers are trending higher, compared to the bottoming-out in July 2024,” Muchow said. “That reflects higher prices for natural gas. Natural gas prices are up generally about 50% over last year. It also reflects higher natural gas production, up about 5.5% year-to-date over last year.”

Coal production is also up compared with last year, although coal prices have fallen, Muchow said.
