The judge overseeing Brian Walshe ’s case on Monday ordered a competency evaluation for the 50-year-old man accused of killing his wife, delaying the start of his murder trial by at least a week.
It was not immediately clear Monday afternoon what prompted Judge Diane Freniere to order the evaluation for Walshe. A spokesman for the Norfolk County District Attorney’s office referred questions to Walshe’s lawyers, who did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Freniere ordered Walshe be sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for 20 days to determine his competence.
