Waco, TX (FOX 44) -- The month of October is known as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, where communities are going the extra mile to raise awareness and take a stand against domestic violence.
Advocates say awareness is the first step towards prevention and making lasting change.
The Family Abuse Center says its goal is to educate the community on the cycle of violence and that domestic violence doesn't always appear as physical abuse, but can take many forms.
"It's the emotional abuse, the manipulation, financial abuse, and all of those things are honored, and penal code, which is huge," Director of Development Elaina Burk explained. "That's a very recent change. And stalking, the harassment, anything that if you're fearing for your life, that's honored by the state."
