BELFAST -- A bench trial began Monday in Waldo County as the plaintiffs involved in years long litigation with Nordic Aquafarms are now seeking financial damages.

Nordic abandoned their proposed fish farm project in Belfast at the beginning of the year, but their legal troubles are far from over.

Belfast residents Jeffrey Mabee and Judith Grace, and the Friends of Harriet L. Hartley Conservation Area have filed a slander of title lawsuit against Nordic, and are seeking damages and attorney fees around an upwards of 800 thousand dollars.

The legal battle stems from property disputes as the city of Belfast previously attempted to take intertidal land by eminent domain that Nordic intended to use for their defunct fish farm proposal.
