SPRINGFIELD ( 25News Now ) - Eric Echevarria, Peoria’s Chief of Police, was honored in Springfield on Monday during Hispanic Heritage Month.
According to a Facebook post from Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza , Echevarria has Puerto Rican and African American roots. She said he is involved with several groups, such as the International and Illinois Associations of Chiefs of Police and the Illinois Juvenile Justice Leadership Council.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker appointed Echevarria to the Illinois Criminal Justice Authority.
Before becoming Peoria’s top law enforcement official, Echevarria served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a commander in the Elgin Police Department.
