SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Despite a 28–7 win over Boise State, Notre Dame’s biggest opponent Saturday might have been themselves — or rather, the officials. The game featured 24 total penalties for 224 yards, making it the most flagged game under head coach Marcus Freeman since he took over the program.
Freeman said Monday the problem wasn’t aggression — it was discipline.
“We got to clean up some of the aggressive penalties with technique,” Freeman said. “The undisciplined penalties are ones that have to be expedited with urgency.”
The Irish were hit with 11 penalties for 112 yards, a sharp rise from their season average of just 29.5 penalty yards per game, which had ranked sixth nationally.
