SALISBURY — On the surface, it was a shootout — with Mars Hill and Catawba combining for a dizzying 70 points and almost 800 yards of offense in Saturday’s South Atlantic Conference game at Shuford Stadium.
Catawba won 42-28 mostly because the best guy on the field was playing defense. Evan Simons, a graduate student who is a large defensive back at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, had two sacks, another tackle for loss, an interception and 12 tackles. Catawba’s defense did a lot to win the game in the second half, holding the Lions to seven points after the break. It was tied 21-all at halftime.
