The Cal Poly football team gave the No. 7 team in the FCS a run, but UC Davis beat Cal Poly 34-27 in a Big Sky Conference game at Cal Poly's Mustang Memorial Stadium Saturday.
The game was the Mustangs' Homecoming. The Aggies moved to 4-1, 2-0 by winning this version of the annual Battle for the Golden Horseshoe between the teams. The Mustangs are 3-3, 1-1.
The Mustangs drew to within a touchdown on a trick play with 1:54 left. Wide receiver Michael Briscoe flipped a one-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Bo Kelly. Samuel Gbatu Jr. recovered the Cal Poly onside kick for Davis, and the Aggies ran out the clock. Earlier, Gbatu caught a six-yard touchdown pass from Davis quarterback Caden Pinnick.
