A Puyallup High School cross-country runner was seriously injured when a car struck him Monday, police said.

The southbound vehicle hit the runner around 3:56 p.m. as he entered the intersection of Seventh Street Northeast and Second Avenue Northeast, police said in a news release. The cross-country team had been running east.

Police evaluated the 27-year-old driver at the scene and determined he was not impaired. However, he was arrested on an unrelated misdemeanor charge, police said.

The student was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Capt. Kevin Gill said the student needed surgery, but didn’t have specific details on his injuries.

A spokesperson for the Puyallup School District was not available for comment.
