A Sydney council has been commended for their response after a tree separating a row of houses from an ocean view was deliberately damaged.

Sutherland Shire Council was forced to cut down a tree that had been vandalised, causing it to begin dying.

A sign first alerted passersby to the fact the tree had been poisoned, before a local noticed the council had taken further steps to address the issue.

Five new trees lay in the same space, with a sign warning against further damage.

“Trees in this area have been deliberately damaged,” the sign read.

“Trees are important community assets. Council will plant five replacement trees for every tree damaged.”
