ST. PAUL — Minnesota Democrats and Republicans remain at odds after a potential special session on gun control proposed by Gov. Tim Walz was supposed to start Monday, Oct. 6.

Walz called for urgent action on guns and school safety following the deadly Annunciation Catholic Church shooting. Republican leaders, however, say they weren’t consulted and argue Democrats didn’t follow the proper process.

The Democratic Party’s proposal for a special session, based on a 10-point bipartisan working group plan, included bans on assault weapons, high-capacity magazines and binary triggers.

Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson, R-East Grand Forks, criticized the proposal, saying it came from a closed process.
