PAIA (HawaiiNewsNow) - After multiple brush fires in Paia with the most recent one declared a case of arson , plans are underway to install gates along Holomua Road.

But it could also force out members of a long-time homeless encampment.

Less than two weeks after a large brushfire threatened homes and schools in Paia, Councilwoman Nohelani Uu Hodgins said she is working to prevent a catastrophe.

“There’s going to be three gates. One at the bottom of Holomua Road next to Hookipa side. That one will be open during the day and close at night, and then two more. One right above (old) Maui High and then the other by Baldwin (Ave) on Holomua Road and those will be closed all the time unless it’s opened for emergency evacuation routes,” said Uu Hodgins.
