MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A Suffield Road resident reported Sept. 29 that he was a victim of a scam in which he received a phone call from a supposed attorney claiming that his granddaughter was in jail because she was at fault in a car crash involving a pregnant woman.

The man, 81, was told that $9,600 in cash was needed to pay bond.

He subsequently withdrew the money from the bank and handed it over in a box to a supposed courier who came to his home in a black SUV.

Later, the scammers called back and said that the pregnant woman had suffered a miscarriage because of the crash and that an additional $9,600 was needed for her bond.

The man then called family members and learned that his granddaughter was fine and that he had been scammed.
