Six years after Henrico acquired the land, the first envisioned use to go forward at the nearly 1,200-acre Wilton Farm property is officially underway – with a goal of becoming the first of its kind in the world.

Officials with the county and Henrico County Public Schools held a ground-breaking ceremony last week for a new “living building” at the Varina site that will complement the school system’s Center for Environmental Studies and Sustainability.

Described as a living laboratory, the 15,000-square-foot building will be 100% self-sustaining and will anchor a 62-acre site that will serve as an outdoor classroom with hands-on learning areas, a pollinator garden, an orchard and a small-scale wind turbine.
