HOLMDEL – The Shore Coaches Invitational is the premier cross country event in New Jersey each fall, drawing several hundred teams with the inducement of racing Holmdel Park’s iconic 3.1-mile course.

Christian Brothers Academy coach Sean McCafferty would like to see it expanded from a statewide event to a Northeast regional one, and Saturday’s meet was a bit of a test run.

McCafferty invited a handful of out-of-state powers to challenge his Colts in the Varsity A boys race, and the result was notable despite the extreme heat. Christian Brothers won, but La Salle College of Pennsylvania got five runners across the finish line before the Colts did – a rarity. And Sean Gray of Portsmouth High School in Rhode Island broke the tape in a time of 15:34, with CBA senior Luke Hnatt placing second
