Gov. Kay Ivey said Monday morning that she has asked the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency to expand the patrol area for state troopers assigned to the capitol complex to include other parts of downtown Montgomery.

Ivey said the move comes after discussions about the Saturday night shootout in downtown Montgomery that left two people dead and 12 others injured by gunshots, including five with life-threatening injuries.

“I have asked my ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor to extend the patrol area for our Capitol Troopers to include other key downtown areas,” Ivey said in a news release.

“I will plan on asking the Legislature to support additional resources to allow our state law enforcement presence to be more effective in downtown Montgomery.
