CHENNAI: The Oarfish, also known as the Doomsday Fish, was caught in the nets of fishermen in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu. This rare fish was caught by fishermen who set out from Rameswaram port. The fish was caught in the net when the fishermen were returning from the Gulf of Mannar.

This white, ribbon-like fish is found at depths of 656 to 3,200 feet below the ocean surface. It is believed that this fish comes to the surface during natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The unusual number of oarfish that came to the shore before the earthquake and tsunami in Fukushima in 2011 is considered evidence of this.
