SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday signed a bill into law that ensures commercials will no longer startle audiences with loud audio.

Senate Bill 576, introduced by State Sen. Thomas Umberg, D-Santa Ana, builds on the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act signed by Congress in 2010, which applied to broadcast television stations and cable networks. SB 576 would expand that to streaming services.

"We heard Californians loud and clear, and what’s clear is that they don’t want commercials at a volume any louder than the level at which they were previously enjoying a program," Newsom said in a statement.

Umberg claimed the jarring ads can add to stress in California households.
