Two people were rescued Monday evening after their boat sank near Harpswell.

The pair were in a 30-foot boat near Mark Island about 6:35 p.m. when they began taking on water, according to Harpswell Marine Resources & Harbor Management.

Rescuers, including a lobsterman, rushed to the scene. The boat, though, was quickly taking on water, and the pair had to jump into the water and make it onto Mark Island, where they could be rescued.

They were then brought to Cooks Wharf on Bailey Island, where they were evaluated by EMS.

The boat remained near Mark Island on Monday evening because of the rough surf. It will be removed as soon as conditions improve.
